Newry secured their place in the Danske Bank Womens League Cup Final with a 3-2 victory over Sion Swifts at a chilly Newry Showgrounds.
Hannah Ward’s opener for the away side was cancelled out by Aoife Lennon before Leanne Domican and Moya Feenan struck the hosts into the lead. Kendra McMullan brought her side back into the game, but Newry held out for the victory.
Kelly Crompton had the opening shot of the game inside four minutes which was saved by Una Fearson, but signalled a bright start by the visitors.
Sion opened the scoring with a slick routine minutes later. Lorraine Conwell threw the ball to the feet of Kendra McMullan on the edge of the box who spun the ball to Hannah Ward and a curling shot was too good for Fearson in goal.
Newry had their first golden chance as the game approached the 20 minute marker. A long kick from the keeper was flicked on by Ali McMaster into the path of Moya Feenan, and despite rounding Naomh Barr, the Sion keeper made a great recovery.
Aoife Lennon equalised on 22 minutes after a long throw from Grace Murray. The throw created uncertainty in the Sion ranks and a deflected shot from Feenan fell nicely into the path of the captain who tapped into an open goal.
Ali McMaster worked some space on the left and brought a good save from the keeper. From the resulting corner, Newry took the lead through Leanne Domican whose distant strike found the back of the net.
A minute after the restart, Newry doubled their lead. Feenan, who was lively all night, capitalised on an error from the Swifts' centre halves to net past the keeper.
Newry had the chance to put the game beyond Sion’s reach after Ali McMaster was fouled in the box. Scorer of the second goal, Domican, stepped up but rattled the woodwork.
Swifts’ task got a lot more difficult when Zara O’Hagan received a red card for an off-the-ball incident 16 minutes into the second half.
Sion were offered a lifeline with 20 minutes left when Ward was tackled from behind by her opposite number, Megan Weatherall. McMullan stepped up and brought the away side to within 1 goal.
Despite piling on the pressure, Sion Swifts were unable to break the Newry defence down once more as the home side recorded a 3-2 victory.
