Chris Watts opened the scoring for the visitors after three minutes when he reacted fastest to Joe McWilliams' neat back-heel inside the box and drilled the ball in to the bottom corner of the net.

Two minutes later Paul McDowell doubled the lead when he finished off a mazy dribble with an angled drive that gave Paddy Flood in the home goal no chance.

With the visitors dominating, midfielder Jonny McClurg looked set to score against his former club until thwarted by Flood, who dashed outside his box to make a dramatic sliding tackle.

Comrades' only threat in the first half hour was a John Dobbin volley that flashed wide, but in the 35th minute Adam Wright fared better at the opposite end, when he nodded Mark Anderson's well placed corner in to the roof of the net.

Just before the break Ballyclare missed a glorious chance to open their account when awarded a penalty following a foul by Andrew Ferguson, but Jonathan Williamson brilliantly saved Sammy McIlveen's well struck penalty at the base of the post.

In the second half Jamesy Kirk's lads were content to sit back, and although Comrades had plenty of possession, all they had to show for their efforts was a series of corners, with Williamson rarely tested.
