STORMING GLENAVON HIT SKY BLUES FOR SIX

Glenavon hit Ballymena United for six following a storming second half performance at The Showgrounds.

Both sides had their chances in a scoreless first half.

United striker Matthew Shevlin was twice denied by Johnny Tuffey. After 20 minutes the Glenavon 'keeper saved from close range while, moments from the break, he was forced to come off his line to make the save.

For the visitors Bobby Burns came close from ten yards while Andy Hall produced a near post stop from Ross Glendinning.

The deadlock was broken three minutes after the break courtesy of Adam Foley who followed up his midweek hat-trick with a thumping drive after being released by Mark Sykes.

Gary Hamilton's side might have doubled their advantage just before the hour when Andrew Mitchell saw an effort saved and while James Singleton knocked home the rebound his 'goal' was ruled out offside.

However, Singleton wasn't to be denied on 66 minutes after he turned home the loose ball from an uncleared Hall corner.

Then, four minutes after that, Sammy Clingan settled the game as a contest with a successfully converted penalty after Glendinning had brought down Burns inside the area ... but, as if that wasn't enough, Hall added a fourth moments later with a superbly struck 25-yard free-kick into the top corner.

The Sky Blues grabbed a late consolation on 80 minutes when Tony Kane scored from the spot low into the bottom corner after Singleton had fouled to concede the penalty.

But Glenavon restored their four-goal advantage moments after that with a stunning long range finish into the roof of the net before, in stoppage time, Mitchell added number six with a point blank header after Glendinning failed to hold a Hall corner.
